More about the Operation
An abdominoplasty is performed under a general anaesthetic and will take 2 to 5 hours depending on the type of abdominoplasty.
Partial abdominoplasty: A large incision is made which runs across the lower abdomen, just above the pubic area. The skin is then separated from the abdominal wall between the incision above the pubic hair right up to the navel. Fat deposits are removed and the skin is stretched down to the incision line, with the excess skin removed before it is restitched.
Full Abdominoplasty: A large incision is made which runs across the lower abdomen, usually from hipbone to hipbone, just above the pubic area. A second incision is then made to free the navel or tummy button from surrounding tissue. Next the skin is separated from the abdominal wall all the way up to the ribcage to reveal the abdominal muscles. Fat deposits are removed and the muscles are tightened. The navel is repositioned.
Dissolving stitches will be used during your abdominoplasty and draining tubes will be placed. These draining tubes will remain until significant drainage ceases and before your discharge from hospital.
Firm elastic bandages will be applied to support the area and a special individually sized garment will be given to you to wear. You must keep your dressings intact and wear your garment all the time until your first follow-up visit.

Abdominoplasty & Body Contouring Overview
Length of Surgery 3 - 5 hours.
Anaesthesia General anesthetic. Can be a day case or overnight case, but the procedure is always performed in a hospital operating theatre. Some patients may be required to stay for 2 nights.
What to expect immediately after the operation Dressing over wound; pain and discomfort; drains; abdominal skin will feel tight & it will be uncomfortable to stand up straight for few days unaided; patient will need to walk slowly with small steps and holding the abdomen with their hands; a firm garment such as cycling shorts or girdle type pants must be worn for 6 weeks every day and night, and then for another 6 weeks during the day.
Infrequent Complications: Hematoma, bruising and swelling,wound breakdown,wound infection. Numbness can be expected in the lower abdominal skin for typically 3 - 6 months, but may be permanent. Please refer to the Department Of Health website.
Recovery
- Shower/body bath after 48 hours covering the wound site.
- 5 - 10 days until socializing with friends & family and requiring analgesia.
- 3 - 4 weeks until bruising and swelling settles (may take longer).
- 3-4 weeks until bruising and swelling settles. May take longer.
- 12 weeks until return to gym and other strenuous activities. Start gently with cardio exercises.
- 12-26 weeks until full settling of swelling and final shape. Scarring will continue to improve for the next 12 months with very proactive scar management.
Post Surgery Advice
- Use recommended painkillers as required.
- Your surgeon will advise when to begin exercising and normal activities.
- Contact your surgeon immediately if you notice any signs of infection or if you experience bleeding or a sudden increase in pain.
- To improve the healing of scars, patients should consider: Massage; moisturizing cream such as E45/Nivea; 1-inch micropore tape across scar for 3 months to help with scar softening; silicon gel or sheet (we recommend Kelocote Gel); Vitamin E creams may also be gently massaged into your scar; support garment (the longer this is worn, the better).

Candidates for Liposuction
Any one or combination of the following conditions may indicate that you are a good candidate for liposuction surgery:
- Areas of fat deposits that are out of proportion with the rest of your body and do not go away with diet and exercise - so called 'diet resistant fat'.
- Areas with minimal amounts of excess skin (Liposuction removes fat not skin) and good skin elasticity.
Liposuction surgery may be considered to treat areas of excess fat in the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts (including male breast enlargement), back, arms and neck. Liposuction is equally effective in both men and women. Consultation During the initial consultation, you may be asked to look in a mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see improved. Pictures may be taken of you, especially if the areas that will be treated are on your posterior aspect (back, buttock, etc.). This will help your plastic surgeon to understand your expectations and determine whether they can realistically be achieved. A determination of the elasticity of the skin will also occur.
A discussion concerning your ideal weight and realistic weight will most likely occur. Plans such as future pregnancies, etc. may be discussed. You should come to the consultation prepared to discuss your medical history including previous surgeries, past and present medical conditions, allergies and current medications. High blood pressure, thyroid problems, diabetes, etc. should be reviewed as these medical conditions may increase some risks associated with surgery.
About Liposuction Surgery
The basic technique of liposuction involves the removal of fat via a hollow metal tube (cannula) that is passed through the fatty tissue. One of the most common types of liposuction involves the removal of fat by attaching a pump that generates a vacuum. This is known as suction assisted liposuction (SAL). In addition, a motor may be used on the cannula that causes the cannula to vacillate back and forth thus performing much of the "work." This is known as power assisted liposuction (PAL). An ultrasonic generator may produce sound waves above audible frequency that "breaks" the fat cells, and the broken down fat is removed by SAL. A laser can also be employed to break down the fat cells. Each of these methods have advantages and disadvantages. These methods will be discussed with you at the time of the consultation. Additionally, the above techniques may be combined to yield optimal results. The decisions concerning the appropriate technique will be judged by your plastic surgeon.
The results of liposuction surgery are usually long-lasting, but they may be affected by weight gain, aging, pregnancy and lifestyle factors. Understanding the Risks of Liposuction Fortunately, significant complications from liposuction surgery are infrequent. Liposuction surgery is one of the two most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons. Most often this surgery is performed without experiencing any major problem.
The risks in most surgeries are similar. Some of the potential complications that may be discussed with you include hematoma (an accumulation of blood under the skin that may require removal), infection, changes in sensation, scarring, allergic reactions, damage to underlying structures, need for revisions, unsatisfactory results possibly necessitating additional procedures, and medical risks. Other risks more specific to liposuction may include indentations and irregularities.
You can help minimize certain risks by following the advice and instructions of your plastic surgeon, both before and after your liposuction surgery. Pre-Operative If you are a smoker, it is recommended to stop smoking well in advance of surgery since smoking can impair the healing process after liposuction. Liposuction Results Liposuction surgery usually improves contours. In some instances it may be used in a circumferential fashion, thinning an area. Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect to wait at least several months to get an accurate picture of the results of your liposuction surgery. Liposuction Overview

What to expect immediately after the operation Controllable pain, swelling & bruising and discomfort in areas where the Liposuction has been performed. The patient will need to wear a support garment to reduce pain and control swelling. There will also be a small dressing over the wound with gauze and mefix/microfoam.
Recovery
- Shower or bathe the body after 48 hours, covering the wound site.
- 2 weeks until patient can return to work and perform normal social engagements including driving.
- 3-4 weeks until bruising and swelling settles. May take longer.
- 6 weeks until patient can return to gym and perform strenuous activities.
- Scarring will continue to improve for the next 12 months with very proactive scar management.
Post Surgery Advice
- Use recommended painkillers and antibiotics as prescribed.
- Use Arnica to reduce swelling.
- After a few days, any gauze dressings can be removed and you may need to wear a support garment. This should be worn as directed by the surgeon.
- Your surgeon will advise when to begin exercising and normal activities. You will also receive advice on your diet.
- Contact your surgeon immediately if you notice any signs of infection or if you experience bleeding or a sudden increase in pain.

Lower Body Lift Overview
Length of Surgery 3 - 5 hour procedure. The patient is required to stay for 2 - 3 nights.
Anaesthesia General Anesthesia with a patient controlled Anesthesia (PCA ) pump.
What to expect immediately after the operation The patient will initially be uncomfortable following the operation as there is a large wound area. They will need to stay in hospital for 2 - 3 nights until they are comfortable with their mobility and pain control. The first 48-hours will be the most discomfortable period.
Recovery
4 - 6 weeks until patient is once again fully functional.
Early mobilisation and regular analgesia will improve the recovery process.
The patient will require 3 - 4 weeks off work. This will vary depending on profession and type of work.
Fully active in 2 - 3 months post surgery.
The patient will be required to visit the surgeon regularly after the procedure until they are fully healed.
Scar Management
- Proactive approach with massage therapy for scar.
- Massage scar 2 - 3 times a day for 20 minutes each time with enough pressure to blanch the skin. This may be uncomfortable to begin with as but will gradually get better.
- Silicon sheet or gel
- Support garments to be used
- Arnica capsule and cream
Possible Complications
- Possible complications can include wound breakdown, infection, delayed wound healing leading to lumpy scars, hypertrophy scars, asymmetry.
